Dubai Arab Social Media Summit Presents First Social Media Study

One time again, Dubai leads the Middle East region in internet technology. This month, Dubai celebrated the multiple successes of social media all in one place. The Arab Social Media Summit opened its gates at Dubai’s World Trade Center on March 17 and 18. The summit received a great influx of social media influencers and a great number of attendants. The summit paved the ground for famous social media figures and aspiring ones to meet up and discuss the growing impact and the future of social media in the Arab World.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Makhtoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and ruler of Dubai, said that the summit was to bring about a new era in the usage of social media through positive use and opportunities for young Arabs to bring forth innovation and development on many levels. He also stressed that social media can move from being a passive past time activity to being an efficient tool that can increase productivity and serve the community through the combined efforts of experts, funding partners and influencers. He said that “in a world where social media gains importance by the day, it is significant to take advantage of all its benefits and propagate optimal techniques and methods of its usage.”

20 Arab young leaders and influencers were awarded

Brandon Stanton, Facebook celebrity and founder of the famous Humans of New York page, launched the two-day summit by sharing his social media success story with the audience. He pointed out that great achievements don’t depend on a perfect idea. “It starts with the work and then, the greatness of it comes out of hundreds of thousands of tiny evolutions,” he said.

That is indeed what many young Arabs attempted and succeeded in.  Twenty of the most outstanding social media individuals and institutions were awarded on the first day of the summit in different categories in the presence of Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai and Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai.  Sheikh Mohammed praised the young winners’ innovation, responsible contribution and their willingness to lead the Arab world towards more promising horizons.

The first Arab Social Media Report

The summit programme also included a report on Arab Social Media conducted on 7000 individuals using social media in 18 Arab countries which was also launched on the first day of the summit. Being the first report ever written about social media and its use and impact on the Arab world, it represents an important step that has been accomplished and that will guarantee advancement in business, technology and services.

Mohammed Al Gergawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs and Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Arab Social Media Influencers Summit said that the report is momentous in that it reveals the degree of influence to which social media has risen in domains such as economy, business and society. He adds: ” The report also provides an overview of the future plans in the promotion of the best use of social media channels at the local, regional and global levels.”
